D-Din Font 1451 is a sans serif font especially designed for traffic, technical, and administrative usages and this is why it is among the most used fonts currently. Its existence in such a form can be traced back to 1931, when it was first standardized by the German standards body D-DIN (Deutsches Institut fur Normung oder German Institute for Standardization) originally for stenciled letter use as a DIN 1451-Schriften typeface standards document, although others of this sort were existing in those days as well.
Originally D-DIN fonts were designed to be implemented for industrial applications and particular attention was paid to the fact that their shapes would look good on industrial metal type. Because they are so simple to use and appear generic, they were widely adopted by signage and show variations.
