Avant Garde Gothic Font is an ITC font family inspired by the typeface used for Avant Garde magazine logos and headlines by Herb Lubalin of Lubalin Design LLC and Tom Carnase from Lubalin’s design firm, Tom Carnase of Lubalin Design LLC respectively. Together they collaborated in developing this concept into an entire typeface family.
These fonts were developed by Ed Benguiat in 1974, while their obliques were created through a collaboration between Andre Gurtler, Erich Gschwind, and Christian Mengelt in 1977.
The original designs were composed of two parts, with one component creating headlines and the other copying text. When digitization occurred, however, one style of text, including its ligatures and alternate styles, was selected as its only representation; additionally, this Font family has five weight options (four condensed and complementary weights for larger font sizes).
